2022 World Car Awards – Hyundai Ioniq 5 crowned World Car of the Year

Hyundai Ioniq 5 wins the prestigious World Car of the Year title and drives home with the World Car Design of the Year and World Electric Vehicle of the Year awards as well. Toyota Yaris Cross, Mercedes-Benz EQS and Audi e-tron GT also make it to the winners list.

By Car Cost Savings: The winners of the World Car Awards 2022 have been announced and it is Korean automaker Hyundai that has won big with its Ioniq 5 EV sweeping three award categories – World Car of the Year (WCOTY), World Electric Vehicle of the Year and World Car Design of the Year. In total, EVs won five out of the six categories, with the Mercedes-Benz EQS winning the World Luxury Car of the Year and Audi e-Tron GT winning the World Performance Car of the Year.

Winners of the WCOTY 2022 were announced at the New York International Auto Show. The awards are presented after a meticulous process consisting of a jury of 102 automotive journalists from around the globe. Yogendra Pratap, Editor, Auto Today is also a member of the jury.

World Car of the Year 2022

Hyundai Ioniq 5 beat the Kia EV6 and Mustang Mach-e to the World Car of the Year title.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 won the WCOTY 2022 title, against the Kia EV6 that came second and the Ford Mustang Mach-e that finished third. Vehicles eligible for WCOTY must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units per year. These cars must also be priced below luxury-car level in their primary markets, must be on sale in at least two major markets, including China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America and the US on two separate continents between January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022.

World Urban Car 2022

2022 World Urban Car – Toyota Yaris Cross

World Urban Car of the Year 2022 has been secured by the Toyota Yaris Cross with the Opel Mokka securing second and the Volkswagen Taigun finishing third. For this category, vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units per year and must be on sale in at least two separate continents and in major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) between January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022. Vehicles should have a maximum overall length of 4.3m and be public road legal.

World Luxury Car 2022

2022 World Luxury Car – Mercedes-Benz EQS

Mercedes-Benz EQS is the World Luxury Car of the Year 2022. The all-electric luxury sedan won against the BMW iX that finished second and the Genesis GV70 that came third. Vehicles eligible for the World Luxury Car award must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units/year, must be priced at the luxury-car level in their primary markets, and must be on sale in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022.

World Performance Car 2022

2022 World Performance Car – Audi e-tron GT

Audi e-Tron GT is the World Performance Car of the Year 2022, winning against the BMW duo of M3/M4 that finished second while the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ finished third. Vehicles eligible for World Performance Car must be produced in volumes of at least 2,000 units/year, must be overtly performance-focused in overall character, and must be on sale in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022. Substantially revised variations of existing models, specifically designed to enhance overall performance characteristics may be eligible at the discretion of the organisers.

World Electric Vehicle of the Year 2022

2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year – Hyundai Ioniq 5

World Electric Vehicle of the Year also was awarded to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, edging out the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the Audi e-Tron GT. Vehicles eligible for World Electric Vehicle of the Year must be powered solely by one or more electric motors, must be produced in volumes of at least 5,000 units/year and must be on-sale in at least two major markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) on at least two separate continents within the period January 1, 2021 and March 30, 2022.

World Car Design of the Year 2022

2022 World Car Design of the Year – Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundais third award is the World Car Design of the Year 2022, which it won against the Audi e-Tron GT (2nd) and Kia EV6 (3rd). All vehicles eligible for any category are automatically eligible for the World Car Design award.
